Quick Draw at MIT
Quick Draw : A Crash Course for Absolute Beginners is currently offered at MIT as an extracurricular course where students learn to draw representationally in approximately 10 hours. It is also offered as a private course, and will be taught again in March and April at MIT.
Learn to draw, even if you can’t. By practicing the most effective drawing techniques and applying the latest in cognitive research, this course helps novice/absolute beginners to draw what they see (representational drawing) in approximately 10 to 12 hours of class time. It provides a simple explanation of how the thought process interferes with the ability to draw, and then explains what “natural-born” talents do differently, thus guiding you towards adopting the same mindset and on your path to obtaining similar results. If you have the motor-skills to sign your name, then you have the ability to draw what you see. No magic elixirs or time travel required.
ModVic – Creative Projects Director
Working as Creative Project Director for Bruce Rosenbaum’s ModVic expanded my boundaries of historic, technological, aesthetic, storytelling and worldbuilding skills. From the six-month city-wide exhibit, Steampunk Springfield, to conceptualizing projects for The Downtown Las Vegas Project, The Hershey Foundation and co-developing the backstories, characters and technologies behind the Humachines travelling exhibit I had the pleasure and challenge of creating micro-computer systems, animation, video, branding, logos, signage photography, custom paint restoration, and more.
I helped to kick-start the Steampunkinetics project with UMass Lowell’s Disabilities Studies Department Professor Dr. Ashleigh Hillier which works with autistic youth. And later preparing visuals and assisting with the content for Bruce’s TED talk on the subject. Reimagining Resilience TedX Talk
I also helped to make the SteamAble Wheelchair a reality by creating visuals and managing fundraising efforts.
Throughout the Steampunk Springfield exhibit, I created the branding and marketing concept and materials working alongside the Springfield Museum’s staff. I developed and illustrated the re-imagined city seal, the passport visitors guides. invitations, signage and wall text for the exhibition. I also programmed and wired the Humachines mini-computers and created original video and animation content for each sculpture.
In my business – Steampunk requires an appreciation of history + art + technology. Mauricio has a well rounded awareness of art and technology, problem solving, constraint based creativity, and how to fuse art and tech together seamlessly. He also has a strong sense and specific process in guiding others to generate creative ideas combining art and science and the combination of form and function, in unexpected and delightful ways.
Mill No. 5
In Lowell, mill owner Jim Lichoulas invited me to help him re-imagine 50,000 square feet of unused floorspace in a Victorian mill. I developed the concept behind Mill No. 5, an indoor streetscape of shops, studios, cafes and an independent cinema. Serving as co-director, we scoured antique salvage yards for storefronts, doorways, windows, moulding and other Victorian era artifacts. Working with architects, builders and designers, we developed a unique concept and experience as a gathering place for independent commerce and ideas.
While working on two separate videos for the Boston Day and Evening Academy, I was invited to register as a substitute teacher with BPS in order to cover the Studio Arts courses and a full semester covering Undergraduate and Advanced Technology.
I’ve also had the pleasure of working with 3Rivers Arts organizing talent, projects and concepts for the 9’s Festival and managing, producing and directing the Fall Ball, Hollywood in Black and White as well as designing the program, poster and other design materials. For the Nines Festival I developed the concept and procured the talent to produce the worlds longest playable Madinda xylophone. Constructed by Dr. Tom Malone, Professor of Music at UMass Lowell and Fireseed Arts. The xylophone was constructed from discarded wood, and the xylophones were later donated to several school music programs.
In France I opened L’Espace, a gallery and arts space where I curated all exhibits and events including a concert with Walter Thompson, the inventor of Soundpainting, dance performances with the Centre Chorégraphique National de Tours, music with Rubin Steiner and various poetry, workshops and other activities.
I’ve also worked as a freelance illustrator/designer, creating memorable event posters, CD packaging and many other projects.
I began my career as a studio artist, and was quickly recruited to teach and run art programs for diverse populations. I developed a performance art trilogy which was performed at the ICA Boston, The Frontera Fest in Austin TX and in other states. I regularly exhibited my artwork and received several awards, grants and commendations.
I created Arts Programs for many fine organizations, The Institute of Contemporary Art, (ICA) Boston, WGBH Television, The Boston Center for the Arts (BCA), Massachusetts College of Art (MassArt), Citizens for Safety/Hands without Guns, Ecole Bilingue and many others.
I also exhibited in many venues including the Smithsonian Institute, ICA Boston, BCA, New England School of Art and Design, Lilith Fair, Borders Bookshops, agnes b., Boston City Hall, Boston Public Library and many other locations.
My Illustrations and photos have been published in The Wall Street Journal, Arts New England, Dollars and Sense magazine and I illustrated 72 short childrens books for Voices of Love and Freedom.
